Shocked to hear of deterioration of old museum E-mail

Dear Editor,
Avril Horan's item on the deterioration of the old City Museum building at Spanish Arch (Wednesday 12 September) came as a particular shock to me.

The Western Writers' Centre - for whom, we understand, the City Council are 'anxious' to find premises - wrote to the council some time ago to investigate the possibility of taking over the building or part of the building for the centre's use - and we were effectively told what we could do with the suggestion. The building, as I recall the correspondence, was for the use of the council for their own purposes. That was that.

Clearly a sad attempt to fob us off, a bowing-down yet again to local politico-cultural pressures. We would have looked after the premises, given it a cultural life: Galway City Council were not in the least interested in this and were curt about it, too. Anyone up for asking them why?

The loss of this building is disgraceful. It would now, had we had our way, be a possible site for a writers' centre, with a café and reading centre, up and running and attracting people to Galway as one more centre of culture here, the only one of its kind west of the Shannon. But someone in the council clearly was against the idea.

If Galway Civic Trust's Dello Collier has a 'project in mind to keep the building for community use,' I would like to hear of it. The Western Writers' Centre has, after all, worked with Galway Civic Trust successfully at the Fisherman's Tower. I would presume the Trust – unlike the somewhat craven city council - will consider the Western Writers' Centre in their deliberations. I am willing to speak with her at any time.

Sincerely,
Fred Johnston,
Western Writers' Centre,
