Dear Editor,

The Aer Lingus Shannon-Heathrow gate-nap will prove disastrous for most businesses across the entire western seaboard. Switching to alternative carriers, flying to lesser London airports from Shannon, Galway and Knock cannot make up for the loss of efficiency direct Heathrow flights brought to this region.

These vital life-line routes are too valuable to play board-room games with. Our fragile Atlantic Corridor's economy and population will suffer inordinately from this politically expedient, though socially naive move. Inept government oversight of these economically vital routes may have given Aer Lingus a sweet-heart wind-fall, but remember short-term gain can bring long-term pain!

That the Aer Lingus announcement was cynically managed to break over the August Bank Holiday and glean less public attention, only adds insult to injury. That our politicians have hidden mute in their holiday retreats only confirms their dearth of empathy, charisma and gumption. Our limited and coveted national assets are entirely too vulnerable to profit-seeking corporate raiders. The Eircom, Corrib Gas and Aer Lingus sell-off has not benefited the general public. Inflation, not efficiency, has been the inevitable result of the national fire-sale. The ESB is already being groomed for the auction block. Will the last employer in Shannon please turn the lights out!

Brian Nolan,
Barna,
Co. Galway
