School drop offs and pick ups have become dangerous E-mail

Dear Editor,
Even walking along footpaths has become a daily danger here in Galway, not from standard traffic flow but due to school drop off and pick ups. It has become such a serious danger to pedestrians that I cannot imagine the struggle for pushchairs/wheelchairs/old people and small children.

Alas, very unfortunately for me and my family, we live just yards from a school that my own son attends. The task of bringing my son to school daily, as we walk, has turned into a complete assault course. We end up negotiating the road or footpath. Vehicles, usually huge jeeps and SUV types, park just at the edge of the footpaths...fully parked!

They leave no room at all for people walking and they often also leave small children and babies unattended in their huge vehicles. This itself is an illegal step, but they don't just drop and go. Oh no, they must stand and gossip at the school gates. The fact that small children and babies are left unsupervised seems unimportant to them. God forbid a hand brake could slip. What will happen then? And then who's to blame?

I don't know if it is that such parking is perhaps legal at school areas? If not, could the Gardaí/law enforcers please please please, before a serious accident may occur, do some thing to cease this behaviour. It is dangerous/illegal/selfish/disrespectful and just what makes these people think it is OK to force others into dangerous positions in order to allow them to park so dangerously for their own convenience?

They know who they are.

From a very annoyed parent and pedestrian.
