Rolling roadblock should obey rules of road E-mail

Dear Editor,
So Mags from Oranmore pays motor tax and insurance and has as much right to drive on the road as these 'uncivilised people who attempt to throw their weight around'.

She would do well to remember that she also has to abide by the rules of the road, as do the rest of us, when she decides to operate as a right hand lane rolling roadblock. With this in mind, she should perhaps cast her eye over this extract from 'The Rules of the Road' regarding driving on dual carriageways.

'Dual carriageways are roads with two or more lanes of traffic travelling in each direction. The outer or right-hand lane in each direction is the lane nearest to the centre of the dual carriageway. You must normally drive in the left-hand lane of a dual carriageway. You may use the outer lane of a two-lane or three-lane dual carriageway only:

  • for overtaking, and
  • when intending to turn right a short distance ahead.'

This means that you do not drive in the right hand lane for the entire length of the dual carriageway because your turn off is a mile away; you drive in the left hand lane until close to your turn off and then move to the outer lane.

I do not condone undertaking, as it also is illegal, but it is the actions of people like Mags openly disobeying these rules, if she ever knew them in the first place, that cause infuriated drivers to undertake and thus create a potentially dangerous road manoeuvre.

I could end this with numerous quotes but 'people in glass houses should not throw stones' seems quite apt in this case.

Regards,
Enda McLaughlin,
Torla,
Cahermore,
Kinvara

if mags is driving at the posted speed limit then what is the proplem as the rules of the road also states that you cannot break the speed limit when overtaking.
