Refuse service should be privatised E-mail

Dear Editor,
I am writing in relation to a letter I read in your paper recently regarding the waiver system that operates in the Galway City Council.

I was amazed to read that over 3,000 people do not pay a cent to get their rubbish taken away. This is a staggering figure when you consider that the majority of these people, I'm sure, pay the €257 yearly to have their NTL installed in their homes. They do not complain about that. You would get a lot of rubbish removed for that kind of money.

I'm fed up to the teeth hearing politicians talking about these poor unfortunate people. As the writer of the letter said, do they ever visit the homes of the people they are putting up a case for and see for themselves the plasma TV screens, iPods, camcorders, computers?

The reason I am writing this letter is that if the city council were responsible for the cable network installing TV channels to the city, you would have the same people seeking to have this service free, but just because it is privately owned there is not one complaint about having to pay for the service.

It's now time for the city council to consider privatising the refuse service and make everyone pay for taking away their rubbish, after all they are the ones that are creating it, instead of depending on the tax and ratepayer to fund both taking their refuse and their good lifestyle. Yours,

Mairead Connolly,
Knocknacarra,
Galway
