Dear Editor, As a proud Galway resident I feel outraged, embarrassed and ashamed at the ongoing water crisis. I am outraged that our extremely well paid civil ‘servants’ in government, in the City Council, in the County Council and in the HSE don’t have the respect, decency or professionalism to issue an apology to the people of Galway and our visitors, to address us in a public forum, to provide us with regular safety updates via the post, or to provide free safe water whilst they fumble to address the crisis. I am embarrassed to be a voter and tax payer in a city that prides itself on environmental awareness but can’t provide a basic health necessity to its citizens or visitors. I am ashamed that I, nor many of my fellow city and county people, haven’t as yet taken to the streets en masse and demanded the resignations of those responsible as would happen in many other countries. There also appears to be relatively little reaction from the business and hospitality sector who are profiting from the sales of bottled water. This is a problem that affects us all but more so the poor, the sick, the elderly, asylum seekers in centres and other vulnerable groups. It’s time for transparency, accountability, civic action and basic respect and service delivery from the public agencies responsible. After all that’s what they’re paid for! Now is the time that every resident of this great city joined together and demanded updates, action and remedies both now and in the future. Clean, safe public water is a basic right and I for one demand it now. Ms Joesphine Cassidy, Rockbarton Rd. Salthill, Galway |
