Dear Editor
We have just returned to Texas from a delightful
visit to the 'Emerald Isle'. Our visit was centred around the beautiful
Galway area. Even driving 'on the wrong side of the road' wasn't as bad
as we had feared. Certainly, this good impression was enhanced by what
we found to be very courteous, skilled...and patient Irish drivers.
Having said that, 'roundabouts' remained the dreaded lurch for us. We
thought we had seen and experienced all the possible configurations and
machinations of these creatures: large, magnificent roundabouts,
simple, cute roundabouts, painted ones, daisy-chained roundabouts, and
even what appeared to be a roundabout within a roundabout. That is,
until we came across, or upon, the Bodkin roundabout in Galway City, an
ogre of a roundabout with traffic lights around and within its bowels.
If the designers of this roundabout intended to design a truly complex
and wicked roundabout to confound 'good, ole' Texas drivers, they have
certainly succeeded. Other than that, we loved our Irish sojourn.
