Dear Editor,
I feel it is a pity that Christians are being asked to desert Amnesty International over the abortion issue. I am a member of AI and intend to stay because:
- AI speaks up for victims of oppressive regimes in villages and cities around the world. These are the 'poor of the earth' whom we Christians must defend.
- The Western World turns a blind eye to Dafur – but AI is the thorn in its side whose voice will not be silenced while defenceless women and children are being raped because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The values of international capitalism are violent and unjust – whatever stands in the path will be annihilated. The trouble is that Christianity and capitalism go hand in hand. One rarely challenges the other. But liberation theology was crushed by the present pontiff.
Volunteers who work for Amnesty International care enough about what happens to those alive on the planet, but I don’t hear enough Catholics clamouring about injustice towards the living.
Yours sincerely,
