More scrutiny of groups engaged in crisis pregnancy counselling E-mail

Dear Editor,

While there is much commentary in the media in recent days in relation to crisis pregnancy counselling agencies, it should be noted that Galway For Life has repeatedly sought to raise awareness regarding the need for more scrutiny of certain organisations engaged in such work.

In particular, we believe that certain groups in receipt of taxpayers’ money from the Crisis Pregnancy Agency warrant serious examination. For example, the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA), an organisation which is in receipt of such funds, has openly campaigned for the availability of abortion in Ireland.

In 2002 the IFPA spent a large sum of money campaigning for a No vote in the referendum on abortion on the grounds that the ‘right to abortion’ should not be restricted. The IFPA is also a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, a federation of some of the world's largest abortion advocates and providers. Further, in 2004 the Irish Family Planning Association launched a campaign for the wide availability of abortion in Ireland and engaged in lobbying public representatives for a change in the law.

It is ludicrous that this organisation is in receipt of a large amount of taxpayer’s money to provide ‘non-directive’ counselling to women in crisis pregnancy. Whatever one's opinion on abortion, is it really appropriate that an organisation which has described itself as (and is without doubt) the leading campaigner for abortion in Ireland, should be counselling such vulnerable women?

Yours sincerely,

Sjef Schutte,
Chairperson,
