Little outcry when Shannon’s profitability was given precedence over Iraqi lives E-mail

Dear Editor,

Marian Harkin MEP seems to be fulfilling her role as public representative and expressing her general feeling of the region with the heading to her letter ‘Government has failed to put people before profit in Shannon-Heathrow Pull Out’ (letters 15/8/07).

I would have a little more sympathy for the deluge of weeping and the gnashing teeth if it was less double standard and self-serving. There was little public outcry from the political chancers when Shannon’s corporate profitability was given precedence over the lives of Iraqi people, and our civilian infrastructure was pimped to an illegal mercenary war and it was thought expedient to turn a blind eye to torture kidnap-flights targeting and destroying societies no more guilty than the people of Shannon for the September 2001 attacks on the US.

You cannot have your free market fattening your tiger on the bodies of Iraqi children on Monday and then expect to scream righteous socialist outrage on Tuesday when the market skips out of your hitherto privileged corner.

The inconsistency gets a bit consistent for a healthy digestion to stomach.

Yours truly,

Damien Flinter,
Castleview,
Headford,
Co. Galway
