Jesus never said Christians must turn the other cheek E-mail

Dear Editor,
I write in response to the letter from Paul Grealish (Wednesday 12 September), in which he claims that Jesus stated, Christians MUST 'turn the other cheek'. Not so.

This quote (Luke 6:29) is a reference to preaching by Jesus, during which he was using what we today would call figures of speech in order, in this case, to demonstrate the extreme importance of tolerance.

I consider this, along with his suggestion that Jesus and St Paul said Christians should keep their mouths shut on matters of government policy and public loyalty, just a small bit inventive.

I do agree, however, with his point about the abortion debate going on 'ad infinitum' which it will, until all concerned accept that there is not one of us walking this earth, without having gone through that embryonic stage, that the abortionist lobby try to claim is not human life.

I cannot help wondering if the Son of God was pleased, honoured even, to have received the respect, albeit bracketed, from Mr Grealish.

Sincerely,
Eddie Roberts,
Highfield Park,
Galway
