Dear Editor, The monument was dedicated to six local men who were executed by a Free State forces firing squad at the Old Workhouse on 11 April 1923. This important piece of Ireland?s heritage was dedicated to the memories of Sean Mc Guire, Francis Cunnane, John Newell, Michael Monaghan, Martin Moylan and Seamus O Maille. These executions were part of a wider campaign carried out by the Free State army command in which 77 volunteers were put to death as a warning to others. This monument had been allowed to fall into a sorry state and as such the Republican Network for Unity launched a campaign to canvass and petition local residents to restore this monument and preserve the memories of those who died. We are pleased to announce that work on the memorial will be undertaken shortly and this significant piece will be secured for future generations and do honour to the memory of the men.
Go raibh maith agat. |
