Dear Editor, I note that in your article on Wednesday 1 August about the recently elected Senator Rónán Mullen, you labelled him as the ‘conservative’ columnist and barrister. I presume the adjective in this case is not meant to be complimentary. But what is particularly ‘conservative’ about e.g. the Senator's proposals for ‘a separate system of detention for mentally-ill prisoners’ or for ‘alternatives to prison for non-violent offenders’? I take it that you labelled him ‘conservative’ because of his pro-life views. Would it not be healthier if the media discussed public representatives' views on their merits, rather than just conferring generalised labels on them?
