Galway hotel 'springs' early rip-off E-mail

Dear Editor,
A good friend of mine has told me this true story that should be entitled 'Rip-Off Tourist Galway'. His daughter and husband booked a room in a Galway city hotel on the Monday before Easter, for Easter Saturday and Sunday night.

The figure quoted and consequently paid for by credit card was €170. Arriving at the same hotel in good time on the Saturday evening to enjoy their weekend in the famous 'City of the Tribes', they were severely shocked on being informed by the receptionist on duty that, it being Easter weekend, the correct rate was €350, an increase (within a few days) of €180!

On shakily enquiring about the absurd increase, the visiting couple were quickly informed that a 'mistake' was made by the hotel official on taking the reservation, forgetting that it was the Easter weekend. The receptionist then quickly informed them that they would have to pay the increased amount or return home, as the city was booked out on account of the Easter Weekend.

This hotel should do the decent thing and come forward and admit their mistake in this deplorable situation, otherwise the finger of suspicion will be pointed at all hotels in the city. With the approach of another summer and weekends away, such unsavoury conduct by already over-priced hotels cannot be accepted. Rip-off Ireland, we are led to believe, like most other things begins in Dublin. At this rate, Galway plays a close second fiddle. A bad spring into another summer!
