Dear Editor, The last bridge built here was in 1984. It's also a death trap, even after numerous calls to put a barrier in between the two flows of cars. There is simply no planning in this city. Just travel to Dublin or Limerick and look at how impressive the bridges and roads are. They are a source of pride for the locals. In the year that more cars were bought in Galway than ever before, the council are still stumbling around with various park and ride systems, which do not work. Instead we should be excited about having a new road built to take the cross-town traffic away from the city centre. Now the badly needed Outer By-Pass is never discussed at all. I recently drove to Sligo and was so jealous of the fine road entering the town. What scares me is that the funding for this road may not be here in ten years time. What will we be left with? Already the warning signs have been fired by the multinational companies in Galway about the lack of infrastructure in the city. They will decide to move elsewhere and then we will have mass unemployment in the city. Michael D. has done his best to stop the modern, bright redevelopment of Ceannt Station and yet I have still to go into town to view his alternative plans and designs. So my guess is that Ceannt Station will remain the same grey, filthy and depressing station for the next 20 years. The Celtic Tiger has seemed to benefit all the cities and towns in Ireland bar Galway, which seems hell bent on pleasing the objectors instead of putting the planning of our city first. Simply, Galway City looks like its stuck in the 1980s and between them the objectors and council have done a great job in keeping it that way. Name and e-mail address with editor |
