Fixed Easter holiday E-mail

Dear Editor,
A recent article stated erroneously that the amicable society did not seek a FE but rather a fixed Spring State holiday without consulting the churches.

As Vatican II supported a FE and in 1995 Pope Paul VI in coordination with the World Council of Churches proposed a FE from 1997 onwards, the present attitude of the Churches in the matter should now be readily ascertained.

In these circumstances, or indeed in any circumstances whatsoever, it is not credible nor is it practical that the matter should be pursued without initially consulting the Churches: they alone have the power to deliver the ultimate solution to the present confusion, i.e. a fixed Easter on the second Sunday of April. Should this not imminently appear possible then a fixed spring state holiday should be pursued.

Yours,
J Lydon
Chairman,
The Fixed Easter Committee,
Galway Amicable Society,
Merchant Road,
Galway
