Dear Editor, Now that the hectic season of Christmas is over, I would like to reflect on a most wonderful evening in mid-December when my daughter and I attended 'The Nutcracker' ballet, performed by the famous Russian Perm State Ballet Company at the Town Hall Theatre. From the moment it opened in the beautiful drawing room scene with the wealthy Stahlbaum family gathered together with friends for a Christmas party of dancing and games, the magic continued. One was enthralled at the skills and grace of the wonderful dancers, their exquisite costumes and the enchanting music of the famous Russian composer, Tchaikovsky. It was one fabulous scene after the other, as it went from the reality of the party scene, to the fantasy and dream world that continued. One was so captivated, it was hard to take in all that was happening on stage. Too soon it came to the final curtain call and with it came a sense of gratitude that one had been a part of such a special evening in the company of such wonderful dancers with the added bonus that that particular ballet came with a Christmas theme (the decorated Christmas tree which went on forever was gorgeous!) I also feel so lucky that I was able to see it here in the Galway Town Hall Theatre instead of having to go and see it at the 'Point' in Dublin, where they were staging it some days after (even though I am a Dub!). At this stage I must say that credit for bringing this famous Russian Perm State Ballet Company to Galway over the past few years must go to Regina Rogers, who runs her own ballet school in the city. Without her dedication, hard work and love of ballet, we would never have been so lucky to have such a company come to Galway. We owe her a debt of gratitude for past and, hopefully, future involvement in bringing 'Perm State Ballet' to us again. Sincerely, Maura Heery, Beech Grove, Oranmore, Co. Galway |
