Dear Editor,
Do Galway drivers feel entitled to speed? There's a culture of speed around Galway. People rush in their cars. Whiz towards and past roundabouts; drive aggressively – why is this? Is it that the car is an extension of their ego? People put the foot down and drive harder/faster.

Will getting somewhere slightly quicker make your life more comfortable? It will not make it safer. People have an obsession with staying one step ahead; mindless and countless incidents of overtaking; dangerous and frustrating tailgating – to gain little more than one or two places ahead.

Have some drivers in Galway forgotten that this privilege of driving, like in their early days, is a gift. Driving holds great responsibility; for others and for life itself.

Monotonous journeys along familiar roads cause reduced alertness. Drivers are no longer aware of how close death is to them at every minute. Drivers would do living in Galway a favour if they could just learn to chill out more. Drive at a comfortable, relaxed pace. Leave the ego tucked away when driving. Appreciate the value of life that surrounds and sustains them.

Eoin O'Sullivan,
Oranmore
