Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in response to last weeks article by Brenda Carney 'Unique report calls for homeless services to be easily available'. As someone who has been a user of the service at Cuan Mhuire, I felt that this article was very unjust and I would like to clarify a couple of points. Cuan Mhuire in Galway is not specifically a service for homeless people, it is an addiction treatment centre available to anyone who is interested in dealing with their problem and this may include homeless people. As a treatment centre, Cuan Mhuire addresses the problems of addiction and in particularly alcoholism, as such its work can be compared to other centres such as the Rutland, St John of God's and Hope House to name but a few. At any time, there are upwards of 500 people in treatment at Cuan Mhuire in Ireland and in order of 100 here in Galway alone. As such, I feel it is inappropriate and unfair to single out and print comments of one or two people who feel that they have been poorly treated in some way. Cuan Mhuire cannot be all things to all people; they do a very fine job with extremely limited resources and help a huge amount of people. Yours sincerely, Emmet Major |
