Comparisons between Russian warship and air show are facile E-mail

Dear Editor,
Mr Harrison (Wednesday 2 January) decries the fact that the Galway Alliance Against War appeared to remain silent as a battle group of Russian warships sailed down the West Coast.

I do not speak for the GAAW but I would think personally that comparisons between the battle group sailing down the West coast, which is to be deplored, as is any battle group using our airspace or sea-lanes, and Salthill Airshow are facile. I am also uncomfortable with the use of the Irish Sea by Royal Navy submarines.

Mr Harrison will no doubt join with me in deploring the use of Shannon by US military and CIA 'rendition' flights. One does what one can, I am sure he will agree, and one works in the territory one feels is most appropriate. If the Russian battle group sailed into Galway Bay I think there would be quite a lot to say about it.

Sincerely,
Fred Johnston,
1 Carn Ard,
Circular Road,
Galway
