Dear Editor,

Congratulations to all those who made it possible for Galway United to take their place in the League of Ireland Premier Division next season. From the players, management, board, sponsors and supporters, the whole team should be extremely proud of this marvellous achievement. To draw a parallel with our neighbours across the water, this is similar to promotion to the 'Premiership' elite. The team can now pit their wits on a regular basis with Derry City, Shelbourne, Cork City and all the best teams in the league. Galway United deserves to be a part of this group! They have provided Galway with an exciting team, an extremely well structured and well run outfit and a source of local pride! In fact, the Galway scene has never been stronger. Look at the recent achievements of Athenry, Mervue and Salthill Devon for portents of what is to come, as Galway United continues to foster links with local clubs. There is a strong trend now for fewer young Irish players to head over to England as the opportunities and standards in the League of Ireland are constantly improving. If the game is better supported here then the League of Ireland will hold on to the better prospects for longer.

What can we the supporters do to help Galway United thrive and prosper in the 'New Premier Division?' First of all, we can get behind the team and increase the attendances. A higher league means higher running costs and if we want a team to compete then we must support them! So, if you are in a position to do so, invest in a season ticket now! Otherwise, attend as many home games as you can and encourage your friends to go. Secondly, support the club through lottos and draws, and wouldn't it be nice to see some more Galway United merchandise on display? Give your English Premiership gear a rest and sport Galway shirts and scarves at Terryland. Thirdly, you the sponsors can try and give a little bit extra too. Every cent counts and if you want your name to be seen on European grounds then be ambitious now!

After a long absence, I attended the last few home matches last season and got totally caught up in the excitement that this team generates. The home support is worth a 1-0 lead and let's make Terryland a fortress next season, where teams come looking for a draw at best and go home with their heads bowed. I expect that the excellent Galway United drummers and musical accompaniment will be adding even more variety to their vocal support. How about 'Marching on together'?
