Call to boycott Beijing Olympics E-mail

Dear Editor
I am calling on Ireland Inc, to boycott the Beijing Olympics, on foot of the news that China is Sudan's Patron. As we all know, upwards of 500,000 people have been murdered by the Janjuweed militia who are under orders from the President of Sudan, Umar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, who is now wanted by the International Criminal Court, which is investigating this genocide. China has supplied all weapons to Sudan and, as such, China is arming and defending the killers in exchange for oil, which it buys very cheaply from Sudan.

As a result of China's direct role as Patron of the Sudanese Government and their role in the genocide, I call on the Irish Olympic Committee and on each athlete to boycott the Olympics on moral grounds on the basis that we cannot condone murder for whatever political reason. I also mention Tibet, which we know something about, and other areas of civil rights where China is ignoring and treating the world and its own citizens with absolute contempt.

Now is your chance to be great champions for the world, for people, especially the 2.5 million due to die in Darfur from hunger, disease, thirst and all other slow ways of dying. If you do go, I hope that while you run, jump, swim or whatever you do, you remember, you do so at the expense of beautiful, young people who have a right to life, to live and love, but who live in a place full of oil and gas that China wants and is willing to kill them rather than provide for them. I also call on the Irish Government to break off diplomatic relations with China and recall our Ambassador.

Yours sincerely,
William A. Thomas,
Strongfort,
Craughwell,
County Galway
