Black holes and complaints about road safety E-mail
Wednesday, 10 September 2008
Dear Editor,

I am from Cork, but live in Athenry during the week, since I am working on a construction job in the area.
I travel the Athenry to Killtullagh Road five days a week. This stretch of road has been in very poor condition of late. There are huge potholes, subsidence, as well as stretches of the road, which are covered in muck. This makes for very dangerous driving conditions.

I sent an email to the roads department of Galway CoCo ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) on Thursday 28 August this year, outlining my complaints about the road and asking why the potholes or subsided areas are not being repaired, as well as questioning why the muck on the road is not being cleared.

By Friday 05 September, I had not received even an acknowledgement of the email, not to mention a phone call.

And so I phoned Galway County Council on Friday. The first person I spoke to put me on to another in the regional office for the area in question. That person then asked me to forward my original email to them, since they told me any email sent to the first address, which, by the way is the email address listed on the Galway county council website, would have just ended up 'in a black hole'.

It is now Monday 08 September and I have not received any communication about the issue from the county council.

Is this how seriously the county council takes complaints about the safety of its roads?

Yours sincerely,

Paul Carlile
