All Labour literature printed in Ireland E-mail

Dear Editor,
I would like to correct a number of serious inaccuracies in the letter from Mr Darach O'Flaherty of Caslteprint, published in last week's Galway Independent.

Contrary to assertions made by Mr O'Flaherty, all of the Labour Party's election literature was in fact printed by printers within the Republic of Ireland.

A number of Labour election posters were printed by a printer in Lisburn, Co. Antrim, but I leave it to your readers to decide whether, after the Good Friday Agreement, they consider it misleading for Mr O'Flaherty to describe this arrangement as 'sourcing print requirements from other EU states.' Again, contrary to Mr O'Flaherty's assertion, the appropriate level of VAT was, of course, paid on these posters.

In summary, all Labour printed materials, at elections and at other times, is sourced from within this island, the vast majority of it from the Republic.

Labour Party President, Deputy Michael D. Higgins has an unrivalled record of defending Galway jobs and Galway workers and for Mr O'Flaherty to attack him with the list of rumours and inaccuracies is outrageous. Now that the facts have been stated, I look forward to Mr O'Flaherty's apology.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Ahern,
Labour Party General Secretary

Lisburn County Antrim a town in the Republic?
written by Jason, June 18, 2008

How on earth can Mr. Ahern assert that election literature was printed by printers in the Republic of Ireland when he goes on to state that it was printed by printers in Lisburn. I have many friends in Lisburn and not one of them has been aware that they have been living in the Republic all this time. I'm not sure what sort of a political map that Mr. Ahern is looking at but he has provided no evidence whatsoever to prove that Labour get any of their literature printed in the Republic. Furthermore, he has not shown how Mr O'Flaherty has made "a number of serious inaccuracies".
Now that the facts have not been stated, I'm not sure how Mr. O'Flaherty needs to apologise!
