All drivers should check lights regularly E-mail

Dear editor,
As driving in Co. Galway gets more dangerous on account of increased traffic on the same dangerous, narrow roads, several factors increase the dangers for motorists and pedestrians.

Firstly, there seems to be a disproportionate number of vehicles with defective lights. Far too many have only one headlight working and many more with lights incorrectly focused. Then we have the latest trend of fog lights being used with dipped lights. This has to be illegal and is very selfish.

Secondly, pedestrians must accept responsibility for being more visible at night. It should be compulsory to carry a light or have a reflective jacket.

Thirdly, many cyclists, especially in Galway City, have no lights whatsoever; college students seem to be particularly careless.

Can I please ask all drivers to check all of their lights regularly and replace bulbs quickly, which is a very cheap but important task.

Yours,
Worried
