Dear Editor, May I, through your letters page, thank the Galway Fire Service and the good people of Spiddal for all their help and assistance on Tuesday 25 September. A friend and I had rented a holiday let in Spiddal. Neither of us is in the best of health, so you can imagine the shock to us when at about 6pm on Tuesday 25 September a man was banging on the door shouting out that the thatch roof was on fire. From then on, things were taken out of our hands by the good people of Spiddal. We don't know where they all came from, but their assistance to us was wonderful. Also the help given to us by Galway Fire Service was beyond words. In practical terms, we thought that we would be stranded in Spiddal without a penny as all our money and credit cards were inside the burning cottage, but the offers of financial help that were immediately offered, made us realise that the people of Spiddal were almost saints. As it was, the Fire Service were able to save all our money and cards, and most of our belongings. I am not singling out anyone in particular, as each and everyone deserves a mention and a big thank you from us, but we would like to thank Jack for his hospitality that night, and we shall be very grateful to him. As I have said, we don't know the names of anyone who helped that night, but my friend is happy to say a prayer for everyone who was there at the scene, and a special thanks to the Fire Brigade.
