'Rude and boorish' drivers are following rules of the road E-mail

Dear Editor,
In response to the letter from Mags in Oranmore, who considers herself to be a law abiding driver, may I point out that the right hand lane on a dual carriageway is NOT a lane for turning right at the next roundabout (nor is it a 'fast lane'), but is an OVERTAKING lane, to be used only in that instance!

Therefore, Mags in Oranmore, you are breaking the law by driving in the overtaking lane and the other 'rude and boorish drivers', as you call them, are merely trying, unsuccessfully, to educate you in the basic rules of the road.

May I refer you to page 105 of a recent well-known publication, issued to every household in the country by the Road Safety Authority, entitled 'Rules of the Road'. If other road users want to break the law by driving over 100kph on a dual carriageway, it doesn't give you the right to become a self-appointed police force by restricting their progress illegally. Leave that to the traffic corps and stay in the left lane. A good indicator of when to move into the right lane for a third or subsequent exit, is the 200m sign for the approach to the roundabout.

Incidentally, I am sick and tired of people who try to justify their irresponsible behaviour on the road by citing the fact that they have paid their motor tax and insurance. Guess what, so have the rest of us!

Regards,
Ann-Marie Kelly,
Galway
