The changeover of registration plates in July seems to have given at least a small boost to sales of new cars.
Sales of new cars have almost trebled compared to the same month last year, while sales of HGVs and commercial vehicles are also significantly up on July ’12, indicating that there may be better conditions around for businesses that use such vehicles.
Thus far it’s Ford that seems to be making the best of the sales boost; it’s the best selling car brand in the first three weeks of the new plate and the Focus is the best selling model.
“It’s clear from the figures that, as we near the end of July, the new 132 plate is still generating interest among car buyers,” said Brian Cooke, Deputy Director of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.
“It’s positive to see not only the sale of new cars well ahead of July 2012, but also commercial vehicle activity up, which is often a sign of increased business activity. Dealers are reporting that they are continuing to see strong footfall, and it appears that the many finance offers available are encouraging people to purchase their new car. We hope this momentum continues into August.”
