The run up to Christmas can be a very busy period for retailers in Ireland. It is expected that this Christmas a new record will be set for online purchases in Ireland thanks to an unrelenting growth in Internet usage and the security features associated with online purchasing.
A recent study by Visa Ireland states that Irish consumers will spend €227 on average through online purchases and almost half a billion will be spent in total online this Christmas.
This presents an opportunity for Irish retailers to benefit from increased online spend. However, if Irish businesses are not online then they could be missing out.
Although retailers may have a website, it may not be visible to consumers looking to purchase in the run up to Christmas. Many Irish retailers have not embraced the rise in mobile technology, losing out on potential sales from frustrated mobile users.
The long-term benefit of having a mobile friendly website can be illustrated by the suggestion that there will be more mobile phone Internet users than desktop users by 2017.
According to the Irish Internet Association, a third of Irish smartphone owners have bought something through their phone, while four out of five have used their phones to research a potential purchase. Irish retailers need to look to maintain or improve their online presence by engaging in search engine optimisation (SEO).
SEO is the process of improving a website’s visibility in the natural or unpaid search results. It is widely known that websites at the top of Google get more traffic which can result in more calls or leads for a business, potentially boosting sales.
“Having a website is one thing but being able to be found in search engines such as Google is really what it’s all about,” says Daragh Molloy of PageMax SEO.
“Organic traffic to our clients’ websites continues to rise as we achieve more and more number one positions on Google for highly relevant keywords and search terms. We are also helping our clients with our mobile website offering, allowing an overall better browsing experience for their customers.”
