Despite taking place the same night Storm Desmond visited Galway, December’s annual COPE Galway Business Sleep Out raised an amazing €110,000 for the local homelessness charity.
The event, taking place for the fourth year, was organised to raise funds and awareness for COPE Galway’s local homeless services. 26 local business and community leaders spent 12 hours on the streets of Galway during the same night that Storm Desmond struck Galway. Each of the participants raised over €3,000 each, helping to bring the total amount to €110,000.
Jacquie Horan, CEO of COPE Galway said, “I would like to thank all of the participants so very much for taking part, for turning up, and for the amazing determination and good humour they all showed on what was one of the toughest weather conditions to endure for an event like this. The funds raised allow COPE Galway to put practical solutions in place in helping to tackle the complex problem of homelessness. We this we are extremely grateful. Well done to everyone one of you who in so many ways made this night a fantastic event for COPE Galway and for the Galway community.”
COPE Galway would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to everyone who took part in the event and for all those who helped make it happen. “This was a real team effort and a true community event with everyone helping and supporting in whatever way they could. To each of the participants, to everyone who sponsored them, to all the pubs that allowed us to collect on the night and to the generous Galway public we want to say a huge thank you,” said David Muldoon, Fundraising Manager with COPE Galway.
From a one night census conducted last December by COPE Galway there were 61 adults and 23 children accommodated by COPE Galway on that night alone. And this doesn’t include the 22 adults and 30 children supported in tourist accommodation. In fact, in one day alone COPE Galway supported 106 households in Galway that were either homeless or at risk of homelessness. This shows the reality of what families, people and COPE Galway are facing at this moment.
COPE Galway provides a range of services to those affected by homelessness as well as services for women and children experiencing domestic violence and meals on wheels and supports for older people.
