Women aged 25 to 60 in Galway are being urged to look after their health by making sure they’re up to date with their free smear test, as the uptake of Cervical Checks in Galway is lower than other counties.
Cervical cancer is a preventable disease that affects about 300 women in Ireland each year, with over 90 women dying from the disease. The best prevention is through regular screening by smear test.
Through CervicalCheck, women aged 25 to 60 can avail of free regular smear tests from any registered practitioner of their choice. A full list is available from the ‘Where Can I Have A Test?’ section of www.cervicalcheck.ie or by calling CervicalCheck on Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
Women aged over 50 are less likely to take part in CervicalCheck and women in this age group are reminded that even if they have reached menopause and have finished having their family, they still need to have a regular smear test.
