Galway publisher Futa Fata’s book ‘Bliain na nAmhrán’ scooped the Judges Special Award at the prestigious Children’s Books Ireland, Book of the Year Awards 2017.
Bliain na nAmhrán is a compilation of songs, inspired by the four seasons, composed by Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin and beautifully illustrated by Christina O’Donovan (Spring), Brian Fitzgerald (Summer), Tarsila Krüse (Autumn) and Jennifer Farley (Winter).
The judges said, “This sumptuous illustrated collection of songs in Irish invites young and old audiences to celebrate the seasons and the natural world. Accompanied by a CD and beautifully illustrated by a team of accomplished illustrators, this multimedia collection offers a special aesthetic experience.”
Without a doubt, Bliain na nAmhrán is one of the Spiddal-based publishers more ambitious projects. Forty school children from Scoil Sailearna, Indreabhán took part in the recording of the CD alongside Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin and Corn Uí Riada 2016 winner, the acclaimed sean nós singer, Caitlín Ní Chualáin. Musical direction, recording and production was in the very capable hands of long-time Futa Fata collaborator, John Ryan. Fellow Galwegian Deirdre O’Sullivan also scooped the Judges Honour Award for Fiction for Needlework at the Book of the Year Awards 2017.
The publication of Bliain na nAmhrán was supported by Clár na Leabhar, Foras na Gaeilge, An Chomhairle Ealaíon/The Arts Council, under their ‘Title by Title Scheme’ and COGG, An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta. The book/CD is available in all good bookshops.
