Tommy Larkins 4-8
The minor A final replay was arguably the game of the year and at the final whistle of an absorbing encounter a stronger Tommy Larkins side came with a late injury-time point to secure a hard won victory over a young and determined Turloughmore squad at Kenny Park, Athenry.
In the end Turloughmore would certainly feel that the game should at least have gone to extra-time after they had dug deep after being reduced to 14 players as early as the 12th minute and 13 players for the last 15 minutes of action.
The score stood at 1-3 to 1-1 when Michael Morris – who had also played senior this year – received a straight red card. Just seconds earlier Morris had brought Turloughmore back into the game with a goal to cancel out Stephan Keon’s earlier major for Larkins. However the north Galway youths dug deep and outscored Larkins by 1-7 to 0-4 with 14 players.
At half-time Turloughmore led by 2-6 to 1-4 with Ultan Hurney hitting the second major for the youths from the north. Fielding eight of the side that had already captured U-16 honours for the club this year, Turloughmore continued to control the early stages of the second-half and out scored Larkins by five points to one, until the Tommies were given a life line.
There was twelve minutes left to play and the 14-man Turlough’ youths had hassled and harried every Larkins player forcing errors, when referee Paschal Sheehan became the centre of controversy.
Both sides paused after the referee appeared to sound his whistle after a Larkins’ side line cut, but after play continued the ball found its way into the square resulted in a Larkins goal from Jason Flynn.
In the aftermath of the controversial score Turloughmore had corner-back Eoin Flaherty dismissed after an incident reducing them to 13 players. Tommie Larkins piled on the pressure and within minutes hit another goal reducing the deficit to one point.
Luke Page struck Larkins’ fourth goal in added-time, but Turlough still pulled level when Sean Linnane fired over.
Everyone expected the final whistle to bring the game to extra-time, but it never came and three more minutes were played during which time Jason Flynn pointed a 65 to give victory to the east Galway side.
