An application has been lodged to extend planning permission for the demolition of the Sacre Coeur Hotel and construction of a three-storey office block at the Salthill site.
Permission for the Lenaboy Gardens project was first granted to Granelt Properties in 2007, after An Bord Pleanála overturned Galway City Council’s decision to refuse permission for the development.
City planners had refused permission based on concerns that the project would provide inadequate car parking spaces, leading to on-street parking and traffic congestion and endangering public safety in the area.
Planners also considered the project “out of character with the pattern of development in the area to the extent that it would seriously injure the visual amenities and character of the area, and the general residential amenities of adjoining residential properties”.
However, An Bord Pleanála ultimately decided not to accept a recommendation from one of its own inspectors to refuse permission for the development, and granted permission subject to a number of conditions.
City planners are now expected to decide whether to extend permission for the development by 21 February.
