Beckett once said, "I cannot explain my plays. Each must find out for himself what is meant." Do you think this is especially true of this play? It is a play of two acts. It was famously described as a play 'that nothing happens twice in'. However, it is actually the play that everything happens, other than childbirth. We are all born and then we are waiting to die. What we do in between is what it is all about: work, sports, science, marriage, divorce and love! All these things fill up life. I think people love this play because it is terribly funny, people think 'God I do that or my wife does that.' So no one person can say what it is really about! You have been involved in everything from theatre, TV, radio film; what has stood out for you over the past 41 years? Well there have been so many things, but I suppose I am a child of the theatre. I really enjoyed playing 'George' on Glenroe and doing Animal Farm (that was really because I got to work with real animals!) I would give up theatre for one thing and that would be to do radio theatre. I suppose the highlights are doing 'Waiting for Godot', 'Salome' and directing. For how long more do you think you can play Pozzo? Until we can no longer get around on the Zimmer frame. I would really like to get in all the continents. I suppose I will keep going until I drop! 'Waiting for Godot' comes to the Black Box on Saturday 27 September at 8pm. Tickets are available from 091-569777. It will also run in the Clifden Station House Theatre on Friday 26 September at 8pm. For information on the Clifden show phone 095-30303. |
