Tony Kew was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and studied in the Johannesburg School of Art. However, he is also an Irish citizen and, after living in Toronto, Canada, for a number of years, he finally settled in Ireland.

Tony has a preoccupation with the human form in the realistic and surrealistic genre. "I am a painter who sees and therefore paints in a realistic way. I am sometimes perturbed by the interpretations I see of the female form, especially as they are so-called portraits. I often wonder what the woman portrayed actually felt about seeing herself depicted as an unflattering, sometimes grotesque figure," explains Tony.

Tony has a fine sense of composition and illustrates superb painting technique. Influences of Vermeer can be seen due to the attention paid to domestic interiors of ordinary life and his masterly treatment and use of light in his work. As in Vermeer, the window is a recurring motif in Kew's work.

Many of his paintings contain highly religious symbolism. His style contains a mythological richness, which compliments the religious variation. His work has sold in 11 countries and is represented in several corporate collections. His paintings have been seen on programmes such as the Angelus, Time Out and IRIS and his portraiture has won awards. He has been exhibiting his work in various solo exhibitions as well as group exhibitions in Ireland, Canada and the US since the mid 1970s.
