An exploration of the little white lies between friends is at the core of a play that will run at the Town Hall Theatre next month. 'Art', which on the surface is a play about art and its value, asks the question 'Why do we agree with someone when we know they're wrong? Why do we overlook habits that drive us crazy for the sake of friendship?' The story follows Serge who has bought a modern painting for a very large sum of money. White canvas. White background. With some faint white lines. Marc is disgusted and cannot fathom why a friend of his could want such a piece. For Serge this isn't just any painting; this is an Antrios and so it should be treated with the respect it deserves. Yvan just wants everybody to be happy. What constitutes art? This age-old question is about to put their friendship to the test. With Yasmina Reza's wry comedy, Mephisto Theatre Company continues in its mission to bring innovative and exciting work to the Galway stage. This will be the first time the play has been performed in the West of Ireland. 'Art' will run at the Town Hall Studio from Wednesday 3 September to Sunday 7 September. Tickets, €12/€10, are available from 091-569777. |
