What is the biggest misconception about performers? They're not all divas, some are, of course, but most performers want to be heard, just given a chance to do what they do, if even for five minutes. Any performer worth his salt knows this and would always put his art before his ego or his pocket. They're not all out there trying to live the rock and roll lifestyle either. It’s a very tough, merciless business and I respect anyone who manages to get by and make a living, that earns a lot of respect in my book, regardless of style, genre or age.
I think everyone has regrets about something or other and I'm no different, but, although there are always many different avenues to go down, you always choose a path for a good reason, even though it might not seem apparent at the time. I've made loads of mistakes over the years and had my fair share of disappointments and successes too. I guess, if I hadn't made the choices I had made, I wouldn't be here now doing what I'm doing and I feel it's where I should be. So in that case, I've no regrets. What advice do you have for other performers or people in the entertainment industry? Believe in yourself without compromise and don't listen to anyone but yourself; instinct plays such a huge role and we mostly don't pay attention to our gut feelings. Know when to take advice when it's given and to learn to listen to others, regardless of what they have to say. It doesn't mean you have to agree or act on it, but it's always good to see the big picture. At the end of the day, if you're not enjoying what you're doing then you're doing something wrong. Only when you enjoy something for what it is and for it's own sake can things really start to happen. Garett plays upstairs in The Róisín Dubh on Monday 1 October at 8pm. Tickets are €8 and are available on the door.
