Instrumental swells ebb and flow as atmospheric density gives way to an ever evolving dynamic shift in direction, which in turn rises to breaking point, via jarring white noise and a crescendo that could possibly be standing on its last legs. Rest, who comprise all this and more, will play in the Róisín Dubh on Thursday 14 August at 9pm. A foreboding tension is ever present under an ethereal density and urgency, the resulting sound being an eclectic and continuously evolving undercurrent of melody and noise, which looks to envelope the listener. Rest initially began life in late 2001. A demo was subsequently recorded and numerous gigs around Ireland with numerous bands followed while the four piece wrote the material that what would eventually become their debut album, Burning in Water Drowning in Flame, released on Out On A Limb Records in 2004. A member departed, and a new mini-album was written and recorded, signalling a change in direction from their decidedly Post-Rock roots, before a new member was duly recruited. The band embarked on their first British tour in April when they supported Swedish post-metal outfit Cult of Luna. In October of 2006, a track from the bands forthcoming mini-album was used on the Kerrang compilation album, New Breed, alongside a host of new and upcoming British acts. Admission to this gig is free. |
