Best Irish Feature at this year's Galway Film Fleadh, 'Vox Humana' (Notes For A Small Opera) will be screened at Galway Arts Centre on Friday 26 September at 8pm. 'Vox Humana' follows the story of Luke who is an alcoholic and a petty thief. Once a talented drummer, he is now reduced to busking on litter bins, sleeping rough and strumming Rossini on his teeth. He is haunted by the loss of his daughter and desperately trying to keep in touch with his son. Luke then becomes obsessed with a female soprano who reminds him of his daughter and subsequently works his way into the local choir. Shot in Galway, the film is a story of redemption – almost. It is called a small opera because operas are usually tragic, larger than life, but Luke is a real statistic in a society such as ours. Having won an award for Best Irish Feature at this year's Galway Film Fleadh, veteran Irish director Bob Quinn combines music, drama, tragedy and the character of Galway city in this bittersweet tale. Luke's journey has all the more depth due to the company of the sometimes haunting but always stirring voices of the Galway Baroque Singers, who are brilliantly directed by Audrey Corbett. The city's streets, along with the sounds of the 70-strong singers give this film a unique texture and provide a rare treat for local audiences. Tickets, €12/€10, are available on the door or from the Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominick Street on 091-565886. |
