Carol McGonnell from Argento Chamber Ensemble who will perform during the 2006 Kilkenny Arts Festival which runs August 11th to 20th, Booking 056 775 2175 or www.kilkennyarts.ie

Two of Ireland's most distinguished musicians, clarinettist Carol McGonnell and pianist Hugh Tinney, have joined forces to present a varied and exciting musical programme on Thursday 8 November in the Aula Maxima, NUI, Galway at 8pm.

The clarinet developed relatively late as an instrument. Most of the striking solo pieces for clarinet stem from the Romantic period. This is reflected in the Galway programme, which features music by Schumann and the first of Brahms' magnificent sonatas for clarinet and piano.

A contemporary dimension is introduced with pieces by Bruno Mantovani - Bug for solo clarinet, written in 1999 - and by Michel Galante - Flicker for piano and clarinet, written in 2006. One of the great works for solo piano, Beethoven's late Piano Sonata Op 101 will be performed by Hugh Tinney.

Tickets, €18/€14/€5 students, are available from Opus II, St Augustine Street, Galway or the Music for Galway office on 091-705962.
