The sizzling Gilbert and Sullivan musical 'Hot Mikado' comes to the Town Hall Theatre later this month.

Brought to Galway by Galway Musical Society, Hot Mikado tells the story of The Mikado's son, Nanki-Poo, who is travelling incognito to avoid the clutches of Katisha, an over sexed femme fatale. In Titti-Pu, he falls in love with Yum-Yum, who is already promised to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner.

In true Gilbert and Sullivan style, the plot then thickens by a series of paradoxical events but then, as always, it all ends happily ever after.

This update of the original show is an exuberant, explosive and eclectic concoction of music covering all genres, from gospel rock to swing blues to jazz.

Reflecting a robust score, the choreography of the show is intricate, athletic and extremely demanding. This is Gilbert and Sullivan with a bite.

The score uses 1940's popular musical harmonies and arrangements and a wide range of styles, including hot gospel, blues, rock, Cab Callaway swing, scorching torch songs and 'Three Little Maids' turned into an Andrew Sisters' show- stopper. This zoot-suited, tap-dancing colourful show is certain to provide the ideal evening out for the whole family.

The production is directed by Brian and Sean Power, Musical Director is John Roe, Choreographer is Mary Mc Donagh and chorus master is Paddy Daly. Kenneth Kennedy is The Mikado, while Michael Keane plays his son, Nanki-Poo. Rosemarie Hosty plays the role of Yum-Yum. The principle roles are supported by a full chorus of male and female singers and dancers.

Ticket sales for this production, which runs from Sunday 13 April to Saturday 19 April at 8pm nightly, are expected to be brisk, so early booking is advised. Phone: 091-569777.
