Ben Westbeech confirms new Galway date

Nu soul Bristol wideboy Ben Westbeech has re-arranged his cancelled Galway date and now brings his sweet sounds to The Cellar on Friday 30 May. Westbeech's star has been on a serious rise since his debut long player 'Welcome To The Best Years Of Your Life' was released to rapturous reviews on Giles Peterson's Brownswoods label last year.

As well as his own productions, the classically trained cellist and pianist has been guest vocalist on many drum and bass tunes over the years and his slick vocals adorn the hotly-tipped to sneak into the charts 'Squeeze Me' single from Dutch breakbeat combo Kraak & Smaak.

As comfortable DJing as playing live with his band, Westbeech's soulful sets run from hip-hop to house and soul to drum and bass and should have heads smiling and dancing on Friday 30 at the Cellar Underground.

Friends Electronic

You'll have heard us here in Setlist over the last few months rant and rave about the energised and healthy state of clubbing in Galway at the moment – dubstep, electro, reggae, house, techno, drum and bass… it's all going off in the West at the moment - after a hiatus where proper underground raving seemed to go on a long holiday from which it almost never returned.

Right up there riding the crest of the re-energised wave of euphoria are the Lowerstate crew, who over the last few months have put on some seriously deep live electronic nights. Next up on their Lowerstate calendar is the arrival of underground techno producer Sian to Galway on Friday 9 May.

Dublin born Sian's previous releases have been on some of the finer techno labels and, on his own Octopus label, he has worked with the great and the good of contemporary minimal and techno scene such as Ripperton and Gui Boratto.

One to chalk down in the clubbing calendar for all proper techno aficionados, Sian plays Lowerstate in De Burgho's on Friday 9 May, with support on the night from residents Rory D and Pete. Doors from 10pm and dancing tax is €10.

Scooby Snacks anyone?

There'll be rock and roll shenanigans ahoy in Tosh on Friday 9 May with the return for one night only of those New York party boys the Fun Loving Criminals for a DJ set.

The terrible trio of Huey, Fast and Frank will bring their rock and roll swagger to town and throw down a funk, disco, rock and hip-hop set to get the party started in Galway's plushest venue, situated under Hotel Meyrick on Eyre Square.

Doors are from 10pm and tickets, priced at €15, are available in advance from Redlight Records.

Peep Show returns

We here at Setlist heavily endorse getting out of your house and enjoying the entertainment treats of our mystical magical town, whether it's a gallery exhibition, a film or going to check out a band. But as we all know, there are those times when you just can't leave the house – bad acne, nasty hickies (haven't seen one in AGES… do people get them anymore?), etc… – and you just want to relax and be entertained at home by your reliable old non-judgemental friend the television.

Round these parts we like a bit of comedy on our nights in in front of the telly and this week sees the reappearance of one our favourite TV funnies, Peep Show on Channel 4. Starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb as loser flat mates Mark (socially inept 50 year old in a 20 something's body) and Jeremy (wannabee musician and general waster), Peep Show follows the ups and downs of their calamitous and pathetic everyday lives.

New series starts this Friday night, 2 May at 10.30pm on Channel 4.
