Music: Neil Cowley Trio, 'Loud.. Louder… Stop!' Cowley has moved onwards and upwards from his Brand New Heavies days and comes up trumps with his jazz trio's second album. Imbued with a modern twist of funk and rock – thanks in no uncertain terms to the bass and drums of Richard Sadler and Evin Perkins – this is solid swinging nu-jazz for the noughties.
Club: 091, The Cellar Underground Local rave gods take their new home and shake it to its very foundations with their devastating blend of proper house and techno. Pushing the envelope for futuristic grooves in Galway since their first baby steps years ago in De Burgho's and the GPO, their new residency goes from strength to strength with dedicated ravers throwing wild shapes to seriously wonky music.
Film: 'Shine A light' Martin Scorcese gets drafted in by the Rolling Stones to film the wrinkly rockers live and direct on their 'A Bigger Bang' tour at New York's Beacon Theatre. Interspersed with old and new interviews, Scorcese foregoes any camera trickery and instead just lets the band and their music do the talking.
Reading: Cuirt Festival Ireland's premier literary event gets the royal wave of approval and launches this evening at the Galway City Museum. A dizzying array of local, national and international authors kicks off in the Town Hall with readings from two our most important contemporary writers, Jennifer Johnston and Sebastian Barry. |
