Music: Jenny Lewis – Acid Tongue, (Rough Trade)The Rilo Kiley's front-woman's sophomore solo album is a fine collection of songs that show her undoubted lyrical genius and distinctive alto, but it's still a tad on the twee side for an artist that's capable of so much more (as her stirring 2006 debut 'Rabbit Fur Coat' attests). Nice music, but disappointingly nice. Comedy: Phil Nichol - Comedy Club @ Cuba*Live, Friday 17 OctoberThe all new, lean, mean, and ecologically sound Comedy Club kicks off with a bang as zany Australian Phil Nichol takes over the lunatic asylum for the debut Friday night. Carol Tobin provides the on stage support while Gerry takes the night off and lets some unknown upstart called Tommy Tiernan MC for the night… no, I've never heard of him either. Gig: Elektrische.tv - McDonagh's Building, Merchants Road Thursday 16 October 7pmAnother one of the many wonderful showcases put on by the Artisit? crew in this their third year of music/art installations. It's Elektrische.tv's turn to impress tonight with their loopy live electro show; with Pres on live drums and Julien Pablo Escobar on synths, bass and other bits and bobs this is well worth checking out… and it's free! Film: How To Lose Friends And Alienate PeopleCringe comedy, when done well (Ricky Gervais in 'Extras' for instance), is a wonderful thing; but this is the polar opposite of a wonderful thing. The only thing truly cringey is that the usually reliable Simon Pegg and Jeff Bridges got roped into this turkey. Should be titled 'How To Lose Two Hours Of Your Life and Never Get Them Back!' |
