Comedy: PJ Gallagher - Comedy Club @ Cuba*Live, Sunday 17 August His whistling Jake Stevens character from Naked Camera shot him to stardom, he's just after selling out a five-night stint at Vicar Street (which seems to be the rite of passage these days for any budding Irish comedian) and he's live this Sunday night. Support for the evening comes from Giles Brody while the evergreen Gerry Mallon steers the evening in his own inimitable warm and wonky way. Gig: Blk Jks - Roisin Dubh, Tuesday 19 August One not to miss for music lovers here as Johannesburg/Soweto quartet Blk Jks - pronounced Black Jacks - bring their much hyped (Dazed & Confused, Fader magazine and the Observer and others have raved about them in the last year) show to Galway. Call it dark Afro funk, call it dub rock, call it tribal indie rock… it's all of these and more. Recommended! Music: Various Artists - 'An Taobh Tuathail 2' (Psychonavigation Records) Cian O'Caoimhan comes good with the second compilation (named after his excellent alternative music show on RnaG) of leftfield electronic beats and haunting songs and melodies from Ireland (Somadrone, Cane 141 and Chequerboard) and beyond (Colleen, Susanna and The Magical Orchestra). More zoning out after the club than dancing round the garden, but quality levels are high. Club: 'Family' @ Tosh Lounge Bar, Eyre Square, Friday 15 September The daddies of the Galway dance music scene, Aran and Ray step up to the plate and dish up this weeks selection of modern shapes and sounds. Tunes ranging from Diplo edits to reggae bootlegs and disco joints will fill the floor while the whiff of those sweet Tosh cocktails will fill the air. Fun starts from 10pm, admission free, dancin' essential. |
