Galway audiences will have the chance to see the work of one of the country's most lauded playwrights when 'The Seafarer' comes to the Town Hall Theatre next month. ![]() Conor McPherson's celebrated play explores the demons in the lives of broken men. Set in a house in a Dublin suburb, it follows brothers Sharky and Richard, and a couple of old drinking buddies as they pass Christmas Eve getting drunk and playing cards. The arrival of a stranger, however, raises the stakes even higher and suddenly it seems that Sharky is playing for his very soul. Olivier award-winning playwright Conor McPherson was the Abbey's 2005 Writer-in-Association and The Seafarer is the first work of his to be produced by Ireland's national theatre. Conor has directed many of the premieres of his plays including The Seafarer at the National Theatre, London. This production toured Britain, winning The Manchester Evening News Award for Best Touring Production and a Laurence Olivier Award for his long time collaborator, Jim Norton, before it transferred to Broadway for a hugely successful run. This new production is directed by Jimmy Fay and stars former artistic director of Druid Theatre Company Maelíosa Stafford alongside an exceptional cast of Liam Carney, George Costigan, Phelim Drew and Don Wycherley. 'The Seafarer' will run at the Town Hall Theatre Galway from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 June. Tickets, €24, are availiable from 091-569777. |
