One of Ireland's most highly acclaimed poets, Derek Mahon will celebrate 30 years of Poetry Ireland, the national organisation for poetry in Ireland, with an intimate reading of his works on Sunday 21 September in the Station House Theatre. Mahon is just one of the many well respected poets and authors that are set to captivate and stimulate poetry and literary enthusiasts at this year's Clifden Arts Festival. David Lorimer, will give the Inaugural John Moriarty Memorial Lecture on Saturday 27September in Station House Theatre. Lorimer, who has always been a great admirer of Moriarty, is a member of the International Futures Forum and an editor of its digest Omnimedi - Thinking for Tomorrow. He is also a chair of the Wrekin Trust. Paul Durcan, another of the country's great poets and winner of the Patrick Kavanagh Award in 1974 will recite passages from his own works in Foyle's Hotel on Saturday 20 September, including his 1985 publication 'The Berlin Wall Café' which was a Poetry Book Society choice and regarded by many as his most important work. Louis de Paor, a leading poet in the Irish language and editor of the acclaimed Irish language journal, Innti, will also give a reading from his works on Monday 22 September in Clifden Library, which include a study of narrative technique in the short fiction of Martin O'Cadhain and an anthology of 20th century poetry in Irish. Also present at Clifden Arts Festival will be an impressive line up of internationally based writers, such as American poet, essayist, novelist and playwright, Tess Gallagher, who will give a reading from her book Moon Crossing Bridge, on Friday 26 September in Foyle's Hotel. Novelist and short story writer Carlo Gebler will also perform a narrative on Friday 19 September in the Station House Theatre. For more information log onto www.clifdenartsweek.ie. |
