MUSIC: Fool's Gold – 'Fool's Gold' - (Iamsound)
From the multicultural melting pot that is Los Angeles comes a 'world music' album from a collective of rock/indie musicians. Sung in a mix of Hebrew and English and taking African music, krautrock and 80's pop as their template, they've created a mesmerizing mood that gets better with every listen.
FILM: Mid August Lunch - Town Hall Theatre - Sunday 31 January
The winter/spring schedule of Galway Film Society got underway a few weeks ago and this week's offering is real gem. It's first feature by director Gianni Di Gregorio is a touching, charming and humane film about a middle aged man looking after his mother and, in turn, other friends' elderly relatives.
GIG: Malcolm Middleton - Upstairs Róisín Dubh - Saturday 29 January
It was as a member of the influential, very wonderful indie band Arab Strap that Malcolm Middleton rose to fame, but his solo work since has been of an equally high quality. Unfortunately, it seems as if this could be his last solo tour. The Scot has a wry sense of humour and an often-beautiful turn of phrase that would melt even the stoniest hearts.
COMEDY: Ardal O'Hanlon - Town Hall Theatre - Saturday 30 January
It must be quite annoying for Ardal O'Hanlon. No matter how good a stand-up he is or what TV roles he gets, he's always remembered as the lovable but bumbling Dougal from Father Ted. This is a great chance to catch one of the originators of the comedy scene in Ireland, presuming you missed his Galway show last year.
