Since she won the RTÉ Musician of the Future competition in 1990, Cara O'Sullivan has risen to prominence as one of Ireland's leading sopranos. Lisa Regan meets the Cork woman, who joins star Chilean tenor Tito Beltrán, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and conductor David Brophy for an opera gala in Leisureland tomorrow, Thursday 6 September

ImageIs this your first time performing in Galway?

No, I have performed quite a few times in Leisureland and once in the Aula Maxima, in the National University of Ireland Galway.

How do you find performing in Galway?

I like performing in Galway very much. Galwegians usually give me a very warm welcome.

How does performing in Galway differ from other performances?

I find Salthill is very beautiful and it is so wonderful to be performing near the sea.

Can you tell us a bit about the show?

Tito Beltran (a wonderful tenor) and I will be singing popular excerpts from operas such as Rigoletto, Carmen, La Traviata and la Boheme. We will be accompanied by the RTE Concert Orchestra. The conductor will be David Brophy.

What have you been up to until now?

What have I been up to? A lot!!! That’s the short answer. The long answer includes several performances of new and revisited repertoire, two new operas, one light opera and a Masters Degree, and that’s in the last 18 months!

What was the highlight of the last year?

Receiving a very good result in the aforementioned degree was right up there. Modesty forbids me to tell you what I was awarded!

What are your plans for the year ahead?

I have several concert tours planned, including a tour of Northern Ireland with the Ulster Orchestra in Limerick, Dublin, Cork and New York.
